Firms that demonstrate an ability to innovate often outperform their competition in terms of sales growth, financial performance, and employment. Over the past 30 years, managing innovation successfully has garnered keen interest from both academics and practitioners. Innovation management is now regarded as a vital managerial skill. Competition has shifted from individual companies to the supply chain(SC) level, with firms leveraging SC capabilities to outshine competitors.
SC innovation has gained increasing attention within the SC management domain, owing to its potential impact on sustainability performance, effectiveness, and operational efficiency. Recent studies have identified three main SC innovation activities:marketing-oriented innovation, technological development-oriented innovation, and logistics-oriented innovation. However, there is a notable gap in research exploring the collective impact of these activities on sustainability performance. While individual activities have been studied, no research to date has holistically measured their combined effect on SC sustainability performance.
This study aims to expand knowledge in the field of SC developing a comprehensive, multidimensional conceptualisation of SC innovation and assessing its impact on sustainability performance. Practically, the conceptual framework will enable SC managers to better comprehend SC innovation and evaluate how innovation investments influence organisational outcomes. Additionally, it will offer insights into how SC innovation can enhance companies' sustainability performance.
